BLUE OAK
Blue oak (quercus douglasii)
The Blue Oak is a drought-tolerant deciduous tree, native to the Coastal ranges of California. It gets it’s name from the dark blue-green color of it’s leaves. It is also known by the names “Mountain Oak” or “Iron Oak”. This species is part of the White Oak family, and has yellow, cream & green colors, with a purplish-blue heart wood and white exterior. It’s grain pattern is elegant and has surface depth when finished.
Native Americans commonly gathered the acorns to make flour and dyes, and used the wood for baskets and bowls.
